Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. This chemical compound is part of the xanthnine which is the same family that contains caffeine and theophylline. The toxic dose varies from dog to dog, depending on factors such as weight of the dog and the dog’s metabolism level. It needs a certain amount of chocolate to cause harm to the dogs. Generally, the toxic level of theobromine is between 100 and 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
